City Recycling Frequently Asked Questions

From our Residential Customers:

What kind of scrap metal will you buy from me?

We buy all types of ferrous (containing iron) and non-ferrous metal material that you may have gathering dust in your home or garage – such as old appliances like stoves and refrigerators (without the compressor and with all the coolant drained), old fencing, metal desks and filing cabinets, aluminum siding, lead pipes and even out-of-service vehicles. If it's made of metal, we'll take it.

What do I need to do to use City Recycling's services?

You must have a valid driver's license or state I.D., and you must deliver your scrap metal to us in a licensed vehicle. (We don't accept walk-in business.) When you arrive at our yard, there will be signs directing you to our state-certified scales. Our employees will evaluate your materials for their metal content, weigh them and issue you a receipt that you can redeem for money at our customer window.

Will you pick up my scrap metal at my home?

Sorry, but we're unable to provide residential home pickup.

How can I find out current scrap metal prices?

If you call us at 313-831-3696, and we will give you up-to-date metal prices. Metals are commodities that are bought and sold on the commodities market, just like oil and grain – so prices change daily. We usually adjust our prices monthly, but in some instances, due to fluctuations in the market, prices can change more often than that.

From our Commercial Customers:

What is your service area?

We have served the Metro Detroit area for nearly 20 years. We also will take certain jobs further from our home base, in Southeast Michigan, northern Ohio and northern Indiana.

I have some large out-of-service machines that I want to scrap, but I can't find a recycler with equipment large enough to load them and transport them for me. Can you?

Yes we can. We can handle machines and equipment weighing 100,000-plus pounds. We will pick them up for you and deliver them to our yard, where we will evaluate their metal content and weigh them on our state-certified scales that can handle up to 100 ton. Then we'll pay you for the load. Fill out the "Request a Quote" form on our Web site today or give us a call, and we'll take it from there.

Tell me about your service to dismantle and/or deconstruct industrial other commercial buildings?

If you need to have your industrial or commercial building cleared out for a new tenant, we can do that efficiently and safely. We'll remove any old equipment and machinery (overhead cranes, conveyor systems, etc.) and turn your facility into clean, empty building. Give us a call if you'd like a quote, or fill out the "Request a Quote" form on our Web site, and will give you all the information you need on our dismantling services.

Are you insured?

Yes. We are fully insured and bonded.

What are your hours of operation?

Our normal hours are 8-5 Monday through Friday and 10-4 Saturday, but we also will make special appointments to meet customers' needs. We also can pick up your materials at a time convenient for you.
